The province is committing nearly $8-million to safety and expansion upgrades at Keating Elementary School in Saanich.

The Minister of Education Rob Fleming made the announcement at the Central Saanich school on Friday.

The building, which has reached the 50-year mark, will get seismic upgrades, four new classrooms and improvements to its library.

Ultimately, Keating Elementary will be able to accommodate 100 additional students with the expansion.

“We’re quite squeezed in this year and we’ve taken over our multi-purpose room here in this hallway as a staff room so we’re very keen to have some learning space that’s flexible and we can work with all of our students,” said Mary-Lynn Heron, the school’s principal.

Work will begin in July and be completed by March 2020. The school will remain open while the work is done.

The province says they will commit to 50 more seismic improvement projects over the next 18 months.
