Fire destroyed a Comox home early Friday morning, but officials say fortunately no one was in the building at the time.

Crews were called to a home on Lazo Road around 4:45 a.m. after witnesses saw flames shooting through the roof. Comox Valley Fire Department arrived to find a fully involved blaze.

"Flames [were] coming out of the upper storey and several of the lower windows," Comox Valley Fire Chief Gord Schreiner said.

Firefighters entered a defensive attack and eventually gained the upper hand on the fire. They remained on scene throughout the day Friday to ensure there were no flare-ups.

The building was unoccupied at the time and no one was injured.

The cause of the fire is unclear, but Schreiner said it was fortunate the fire was in the front of the house because the hydro connection was at the back of the building.
