VICTORIA -- Firefighters battled a massive blaze at a scrapyard south of Nanaimo on Thursday.

Flames and a massive plume of black smoke were visible for much of the day at the Schnitzer Steel site near the Nanaimo airport.

Dozens of fire trucks came and went from the scene for hours.

Several cars pulled over on the side of the Trans-Canada Highway near the site, however traffic was moving through the area.

Schnitzer Steel said in a statement that no one was injured in the fire.

An investigation into the cause is ongoing.
