Telus World of Science postpones new exhibition due to fire, remains closed until cleanup

Edmonton's Telus World of Science will be closed until further notice after a fire forced it to shut down on Monday. Nav Sangha has more.

The Telus World of Science (TWOSE) has postponed the opening of a new exhibition after a fire this week.

TWOSE stated in a Tuesday news release it made the decision to postpone the opening of the Amazing Pollinators exhibition as “additional time is needed for the Exhibitor and the Science Centre’s exhibits team to complete the cleanup and setup.”

Kayla Amrhein, the director of marketing and community relations for TWOSE, told CTV News Edmonton on Tuesday what is required before reopening the building.

“While the fire was quite small and contained and extinguished really quickly, (the fire) did result in a fair amount of smoke throughout the building,” Amrhein said.

“In an abundance of caution, (we’re) really wanting to make sure that we’re able to get all of the smoke and unhealthy air out of the building … before we open up to the public, staff, and volunteers.”

She said the fire broke out in a “mechanical space over top of the feature exhibit gallery” and was limited within that space. According to Amrhein, the cause of the fire remains unknown.

There is no opening date for the exhibition and the building will be closed off to the public until further notice.

Guests with tickets during the closure can contact the centre’s booking department to arrange a refund or reschedule a visit through email or by calling 780-451-3344 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
