Swatting is where a person falsely reports a violent crime, such as an active shooter, to trigger an immediate high-risk police response.

It’s called swatting in reference to SWAT (special weapons and tactics) teams, which are often sent out to high-level emergencies.

RCMP said these false reports are “greatly concerning,” as they can lead to unnecessary risks, evacuations, property damage and wasted police resources.

“The act of ‘swatting’ is criminal and there are serious consequences,” RCMP said. “Those responsible can be charged with crimes ranging from public mischief to more serious offences, such as criminal negligence causing bodily harm or death.

“These charges reflect the extreme risk that ‘swatting’ poses to communities. Every swatting incident diverts valuable emergency resources away from genuine crises, potentially endangering the lives of first responders, bystanders, the intended victim, and the community as a whole.”

Anyone with information about the recent swatting incidents is asked to contact Red Deer RCMP at 403-406-2200. Anonymous information can be given to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com.
