Strathcona County council OKs 3.9% property tax hike

The municipal property tax rate has been set in Strathcona County for 2025: 3.9 per cent.

The county’s council approved the rate on Wednesday, touching off the process that will see residents in Sherwood Park and the surrounding area receive their tax notices by mail later this month.

Strathcona County mayor Rod Frank said in a media release he, councillors and administration sought “the right balance between supporting growth and maintaining the services and infrastructure we currently have.”

Of the total on residents’ notices, 64 per cent is used for municipal axes, 35 per cent is collected on behalf of the province for education funding and one per cent is used to support seniors’ housing.

Infrastructure projects the county plans to complete in the next few years include the Station 7 firehouse, an indoor multi-use fieldhouse and The Point Agricultural Centre.

The agricultural centre is slated to open later this year.

The county says a 3.9-per-cent increase on an average residence assessed at $475,000 will be $84 per year, or $7 per month. It says a typical commercial property valued at $1.983 million will see an increase of $792 per year or $66 per month.

Strathcona County property taxes are due on June 30.

Edmonton rate 5.7%

Edmonton set its property tax rate at 5.9 per cent earlier this week.

A homeowner in Alberta’s capital city will pay an average of $763 in municipal taxes in 2025 for every $100,000 of assessed home value, up $51 from 2024, the City of Edmonton said on Wednesday.

Edmonton taxpayers, however, can expect even-higher sticker shock when they get their bills as the municipal hike doesn’t include the education portion of property taxes. The province’s education levy is about a quarter of an Edmonton homeowner’s final tax bill.

Other area communities

• St. Albert city council is slated to approve a 2.9-per-cent tax rate increase when it meets on Tuesday;
• on Monday, the City of Leduc’s council approved a four-per-cent decrease to the residential tax rate;
• Leduc County’s council held its municipal tax rate at its 2024 level;
• Parkland County increased its municipal tax rate by 1.13 per cent for 2025.
