Starlite Room to celebrate 35th anniversary with May street party

The Starlite Room will hold a block party to celebrate a milestone 35th birthday. CTV News Edmonton's Nahreman Issa has the story.

An iconic Edmonton music venue is celebrating its 35th year.

The Starlite Room is marking the milestone by hosting a block party with an Edmonton artist headlining the show.

Tyson Boyd, the Starlite’s co-owner, says this venue has been integral in getting bands off the ground, and now it’s celebrating the big 3-5 with a bash headlined by Corb Lund.

“We have a number of artists that have all started their careers here,” Boyd told CTV News Edmonton.

“They’ve blossomed into some of our biggest cultural exports. This place has been an institution. It’s incredibly important. It’s a big part of the Edmonton identity.”

The May 17 party slated to feature Lund, Jr. Gone Wild and Whitey Houston will be held on 102 Street outside the downtown venue that opened as The Bronx on New Year’s Eve 1989.

Tickets for it go on sale Thursday.

The former Salvation Army Citadel building, which itself is 100 years old this year, was renamed The Rev in the mid-1990s before becoming The Starlite Room in 2004. The building also served as the first home of the Citadel Theatre.
