Snowfall warning activated for Edmonton area

Published:

It's getting colder in Edmonton and there's snow on the forecast for Thursday.

A major snowstorm is on the way to the Edmonton area.

A snowfall warning is in place for Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park as of Wednesday morning.

Flurries are on the forecast for Wednesday night but the majority of the snow in the Edmonton region will come on Thursday.

Ten to 20 centimetres of snow are on the forecast, CTV News Edmonton chief meteorologist Josh Classen wrote in his Wednesday weather blog.

“The bulk of Edmonton’s accumulation will come in the afternoon and evening hours of Thursday,” he wrote.

“This will be a significant snow event and that snow will be accompanied by some gusty wind and colder air.”

The City of Edmonton says it’s ready to deal with the March snowfall.

“Our crews are still actively working,” said Valerie Dacyk, Infrastructure Field Operations general supervisor.

“We have been working with potholes recently to try and help mitigate the pothole concerns that we’ve been having on the roadways. So we have recalled everybody back to the snow-and-ice program, filled all of our trucks, made sure our trucks are ready to go.

“We’ve ensured our inventory is accurate and up to date, ready to be put out onto the roadways. And we will be working at full cruise, 24/7, throughout the snow event and afterwards to make sure the roadways are safe and clear for users.”

She said it’s possible the city will call a parking ban if the snow accumulates, but that will be decided later.
