Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Edmonton and surrounding areas

Environment Canada has issued an orange watch for severe thunderstorms in Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park on Saturday evening.

The notice, issued just before 5 p.m., says chances are high for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds, damaging hail and heavy rain.

Western Alberta thunderstorms are expected to move northeast as the evening continues.

Edmontonians should be prepared for severe weather and head indoors if wind, rain or thunder pick up. An orange watch is issued when weather is likely to cause significant damage with widespread impacts.

There was a continued risk of showers and severe thunderstorms overnight, according to Environment Canada.
