A new thrift store on 99 Street is hoping to support Edmonton’s vulnerable youth with both the proceeds and employment opportunity. Next Step Thrift is a boutique-feeling revamping of Second Chance Thrift Shop in a new location. Each purchase supports Hope Mission’s prevention programs. It’s also home to an employment program for young people and caregivers through the Tegler Youth Centre. “Whether you donate items or you stop by the store, everyone who comes as a customer is really coming alongside the youth that are served through this space,” service manager Lauren Reid said at the Saturday grand opening. She explained the two-part work program is a “gift” to run given the need for entry-level positions in Canada. “It’s such a gift to be able to provide them with an experience that they can put on their resume for future jobs … We’ve got trainings on effective decision making, all kinds of things, just trying to set them up for success,” she said. “We really want to walk with these kids.” Next Step Thrift is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. With files from CTV News Edmonton’s Curtis Goodrum
