The province wants to change how regulatory organizations work in Alberta.
The Professional Governance Act, Bill 40, was introduced on Tuesday. If passed, the bill would combine nine pieces of legislation in the advanced education ministry into one.
The ministry currently supports 28 regulations governing 22 professional regulatory organizations. Professions covered include accounting, engineering, geoscience, architecture and veterinary medicine.
The province said the new legislation will ensure all professional regulatory organizations are held to the same standard.
It would also create a new framework for complaints, discipline and appeals, giving those organizations an “alternative complaint resolution process.”
“The Professional Governance Act will serve as an example of what good governance and modern policy can really achieve. This legislation will promote high standards of competence, conduct and ethics, ensuring regulatory organizations have flexibility and improved regulatory tools,” said Minister of Advanced Education Rajan Sawhney.
