Property tax notices arriving early to head off postal strike

Edmonton residents will be getting their property tax notices earlier this year.

The city said on Wednesday that it sent out 430,000 property tax notices early to avoid problems arising from a possible Canada Post strike.

The notices, which reflect this year’s 5.7-per-cent municipal tax increase, were mailed on Tuesday and should be received by property owners this week. The provincial education tax, which increased by 6.9 per cent this year, will also be reflected on the notice.

“A typical detached home, assessed at $465,500, will pay $394 per month in property taxes in 2025,” the city wrote in a press release. “Roughly 75 per cent of this amount — or $296 — will help pay for city services, and the remaining 25 per cent — or $98 — will go to the Government of Alberta to support education.”

Anyone who doesn’t get their notice in the mail can find their tax information online through their MyProperty account or by calling 311.

The payment deadline is June 30. The city is asking residents not to mail in payments in case of a postal strike, as there are penalties for late payments.

The deadline to apply to pay property taxes monthly is June 15.

Municipal property taxes are used to fund 70 city programs, including fire rescue, parks services and road maintenance. More information on property taxes can be found on the City of Edmonton’s website.
