Oilers acquire defenceman Jake Walman from Sharks, Kane out for regular season

Published:

NHL teams are working to beef up their lineups ahead of Friday afternoon's trade deadline, including the Oilers. CTV News Edmonton's Nahreman Issa has more.

The Edmonton Oilers acquired a defenceman ahead of the trade deadline.

Just after midnight, the team confirmed it had acquired defenceman Jake Walman from the San Jose Sharks for a conditional first-round pick in the 2026 NHL draft and forward Carl Berglund.

If next year’s first-round pick is in the top 12, the Oilers can choose to give the Sharks their 2027 pick instead. If the Oilers trade their 2027 first-round pick before next year’s trade deadline, their 2026 first-round pick automatically goes to the Sharks.

Walman, 29, has six goals this season and led the Sharks' defence in points (32), assists (26) and time on ice per game (23:11).

The Toronto native was drafted by St. Louis in the third round in 2014 and has also played for Detroit.

The Oilers did not make anymore moves on deadline day.

After the trade deadline passed, the team announced forward Evander Kane would miss the rest of the regular season after two surgeries in recent months.

Kane will remain on long term injured reserve.

The Oilers acquired forward Trent Frederic from the Boston Bruins on Tuesday.
