A 30-year-old man is dead after the sport-utility vehicle he was driving Sunday morning struck a tree and rolled over near a major intersection south of the main University of Alberta campus.

Edmonton police said in a media release the man driving a 2009 Lexus RX350 lost control of his vehicle while westbound on 72 Avenue as he approached 114 Street and hit a tree, causing the SUV to roll over.

The man was declared dead at the scene. Investigators say they believe speed was a factor in the crash.

No other injuries were reported. Police did not say if there were passengers in the Lexus.

Police closed 72 Avenue in all directions from 112 Street to 114 Street for several hours while they investigated the 8 a.m. crash.

The road reopened in the early afternoon.
