One of Canada’s first radio stations received a $1 million donation to keep from shutting its doors for good.
CKUA Radio, first established in 1927 in Edmonton, is located at the historic Alberta Hotel. Last year, the station asked its supporters to pledge funds to keep its signal alive.

Local lawyer Brian Beresh gifted the 97-year-old radio station a $1 million pledge on Tuesday morning.
“CKUA has done a lot for our family, and other people’s families. CKUA has meant a lot to the community, and it means a lot to me,” said Beresh. “I have been fortunate and successful, and it’s time to give back.”
Marc Carnes, the CEO of CKUA Radio, said in a Tuesday news release how far Beresh’s generosity goes in keeping the broadcaster operational.
“This significant financial gift allows us the breathing room to be able to look ahead and make future plans for CKUA,” said Carnes. “We value the relationship we have always had with Mr. Beresh, his love of music, community and the arts and we will be ever grateful for his commitment to help when we need it the most.”
The Alberta Hotel has been causing financial stress for CKUA due to “a large building debt,” empty rental spaces and no provincial or federal government support after many requests.
To combat the financial pressures, CKUA held a Spring 2024 Fundraiser, which raised $1.8 million from supportive listeners and has since filled vacant spaces with renters.
The radio station’s chief development officer Kevin Fitzgerald stated “CKUA still has much work to do to achieve financial stability” but has the momentum to keep the lights on thanks to Beresh’s donation.
