A highway maintenance contractor was fined $180,000 after a workplace incident which seriously injured a contracted worker.

On Aug. 15, 2022, a worker was hit by a vehicle while clearing debris near a highway maintenance site in Acheson, Alta.
Emcom Services, Inc. pleaded guilty to one count of failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.
The company was sentenced on Monday in the Edmonton Court of Justice.
The Crown dropped seven other charges under OHS legislation.
Both the company and the Crown have 30 days to appeal the conviction or the penalty.
