Here’s what’s happening in Edmonton this weekend

December is upon us and there are plenty of events to check out in Edmonton this weekend, festive or otherwise.

If you missed the Edmonton Christmas Market in Fort Edmonton Park began last weekend, don’t fear: it runs until Dec. 21. Tickets can be bought online or at the door and give you access to a whole host of festivities and market shopping.

An Indigenous Holiday Market also comes to the Telus World of Science lobby on Saturday. Entrance is free. The market runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and features local work from the Indigenous Artist Market Collective, Alberta’s largest group of its kind.

The Glow Christmas Festival began on Thursday at the Edmonton Expo Centre and will run until Dec. 31. The theme this year is “The Enchanted Forest” and features tens of thousands of square feet of light displays, tunnels and trails.

For an adult general admission of $24 and $17 for kids, visitors can check out indoor festivities like the Merry Maker’s Market, special food and drink, live stage performances and photo opportunities with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Kids can also check out giant play zones and glowing mini golf.

The Alberta legislature grounds are a winter wonderland replete with twinkling lights and festive decorations for the whole month. The official light-up ceremony was on Wednesday, but visitors are still welcome to roam the property and enjoy the decorations.

If you have no bedtime on Friday night, the Art Gallery of Alberta is hosting Art Party: Studio from 9 p.m. until late at night. This adults-only event transforms the gallery into a party with live performances, tours, art battles, hands-on workshops and figure drawings. Tickets are $25 and include most everything but the party’s cocktails.

Speaking of adults-only, singer-songwriter Grandson comes to the Midway Music Hall on Saturday night for his Inertia tour. Tickets begin at $52 and attendees must be 18 and older.

And of course, hockey is happening. The Edmonton Oilers are away this weekend but the Edmonton Oil Kings face off at Rogers Place against the Red Deer Rebels on Friday night and then the Prince Albert Raiders on Sunday.
