Edmonton weather: Spring heat is just around the corner

According to CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel's forecast, it'll be windy today but sunny and warm tomorrow through the weekend.

Temperatures climb above average again this afternoon. Edmonton’s had warmer-than-average temperatures for five of the past six days and we’ll get another one today.

We’ll hit 16 or 17 C under a mix of sun and cloud today. But, just like yesterday, the wind will pick up by midday and we’ll have gusts around 40 km/h through the afternoon.

If you’re keeping track, April will end up with 18 warmer-than-average days, eight average days, and four cooler-than-average days.

That’s three of four months this year with significantly more above-average days than below-average. February was the outlier, with 19 colder-than-average days.

May will start off on the same warm note. An upper ridge builds in and that’ll keep skies clear for Thursday/Friday and most of Saturday. It’ll also play a role in some spring heat to close the week.

That hot air will spread right across the province in the coming days.

In Edmonton, we’ll get into the low 20s on Thursday. Then...afternoon highs in the 25 to 30 C range for Friday/Saturday.

The ridge collapses late Saturday/early Sunday. We’ll get some showers/thunderstorms in the western Alberta late Saturday. That chance of showers spreads northeast by Sunday morning.

Most of that precipitation will stay north of the Edmonton area, but there’s a slight chance of a shower late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

The bigger impact will be the slip in temperature. Daytime highs will drop about 10 degrees from Saturday to Sunday.

Even with that cooldown, we’ll still be no worse than “average” on Sunday...AND...it’s a one-off. Daytime highs will jump back into the 20s for at least the first half of next week (maybe all of next week).
