City of Edmonton to activate extreme weather response on Friday

The City of Edmonton will activate another extreme weather response beginning Friday at 9 a.m., as temperatures are expected to dip below - 20 C over the weekend.

The protocol will be lifted Tuesday morning.

The extreme weather response will keep city facilities open, including libraries and recreation centres, for people seeking respite from the cold.

Day service will be offered at shelters across the city including:

  • Bissell Centre (10530 96 St. NW) from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday;
  • Boyle Street Community Services (15308 Stony Plain Rd.) from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., seven days a week;
  • Canora Community Impact Centre (10105 153 St. NW) from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday;
  • Mosaic Centre (6504 132 Ave. NW) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday and Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday and Friday; and
  • Strathcona Baptist Church Community Impact Centre (8318 104 St. NW) from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday to Friday.

In addition, the Al Rashid Mosque, located at 13070 113 St. NW, will open their doors for overnight shelter from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. throughout the weather response.

Anyone who sees a person struggling outside in the cold is urged to contact the 24/7 Crisis Diversion non-emergency support by calling 211.
