The city is encouraging Edmontonians to shop local as tensions and prices rise amid the U.S.-Canada trade war. “Shopping locally goes beyond making a purchase,” said the City of Edmonton in a media release Wednesday. “It creates a positive ripple effect throughout Edmonton’s local business community and directly supports the people and place that make our city unique.” Edmontonians can take advantage of exclusive deals through the city’s Shop Local Deals Directory. To kick off the campaign, the city will be at the Bountiful Farmers’ Market on Friday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to celebrate local businesses and offer coupons to Little Bear Gelato and No Sugar No Problem. There are nearly 30,000 businesses in Edmonton, 97 per cent of which are small businesses. “Choosing to shop local strengthens our communities and supports the local entrepreneurs who help Edmonton thrive,” said the city. “For every $100 spent at a small business, $66 stays in the local economy.”
