Police believe a medical episode is behind a four-car crash that killed one person in southwest Edmonton on Thursday.

The crash was reported at about 7:40 a.m. in the intersection of 113 Street and 65 Avenue.

Police said it appears a 75-year-old woman in a Honda CRV was driving south on 113 Street when she rear-ended an SUV, driven by a 53-year-old woman, before continuing south and hitting a Honda Civic driven by a 26-year-old woman.

The 26-year-old woman’s car then rear-ended an SUV driven by a 64-year-old woman.

Police said the 75-year-old woman in the Honda CRV continued driving south onto a sidewalk and hit a tree. She was killed.

The driver of the Honda Civic was taken to hospital as a precaution. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators believe the 75-year-old woman suffered a medical episode before the crash.
