1st-degree murder charge laid in fatal shooting in Fort McMurray

One person has been charged in a fatal shooting in Fort McMurray earlier this year.

Junior Ashu, 24, of Edmonton was found suffering from a gunshot wound at 600 Signal Road on the afternoon of Feb. 7

He was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries.

On Thursday, Andrew Barnett, 26, of Edmonton was arrested by St. Albert RCMP and charged with first-degree murder.

Barnett remains in custody and will appear in court in Fort McMurray on May 28.

He is also been charged with second-degree murder in an unrelated homicide in Edmonton in 2020.

RCMP has confirmed Barnett was previously sought by the Edmonton Police Service as a witness to a killing in the capital city in 2018.
