The poop has hit the fan for a Qualicum Beach councillor who's publicly apologizing for an ill-advised prank on a colleague.
Coun. Neil Horner apologized to a bylaw officer at a Monday night council meeting after he admitted to leaving a bag of dog feces on the officer's desk.
Speaking to CTV News over the phone on Tuesday, Horner said roughly three weeks ago the officer told him a relative had not been picking up after their dog along First Avenue.
Horner said he offered to go clean up the mess himself.
"Rode over on my scooter, found the offending poop, felt very pleased with myself," he said.
He then decided to show the bylaw officer that he had in fact picked up the poop – by leaving it on his desk.
"Instead of just carrying on…I left it on his desk so he'd see it," he said. But he realized he'd done something wrong when the mayor called him about an hour later.
"I went, 'Oh my god, what was I thinking?'" he said.
The vice-president of CUPE local 401, the union that represents the bylaw officer, said the member wouldn't be commenting on the case because it's confidential and would be a breach of the town's bullying and harassment policy.
In a statement, CAO Daniel Sailland said the town has a duty to investigate all cases of harassment and bullying.
He said that an investigation had been completed into the incident and officials are seeking remediation.
While the bizarre incident sparked a barrage of jokes on social media, Horner said it's been a hard lesson learned.
"I had a major airhead incident and I feel really bad about it," he said. "It certainly won't happen again."
