Two elementary schools in View Royal were placed under a hold and secure order after a cougar was spotted near the properties.

The order was in effect at View Royal and Eagle View Elementary schools for several hours after the sighting Monday morning.

The two schools are about one kilometre apart, separated by the Trans-Canada Highway.

A hold and secure order means children still attend classes as usual, but aren't allowed outside while the order is in effect.

The hold and secure order was lifted at noon, the Greater Victoria School District said.
