Plumes of smoke could be seen from Esquimalt after a massive fire broke out at the Hartland Landfill Thursday night.

Saanich Fire officials said a tanker and two engines were initially called to the blaze before additional Victoria, Central Saanich and Highlands fire crews were called in for mutual aid. Five fire tanker trucks were used to shuttle water to the active face of the fire.

The fire was confined to the face of the landfill and did not spread to nearby trees.

Crews needed an excavator to help put it out.

Residents living near the landfill could see reduced water pressure as a result, Saanich Fire said.

The cause is unknown, and the landfill was closed Friday as a result.
