A member of CFB Esquimalt has died in hospital after being seriously injured on the job last week.

Master Seaman Guillermo Morales Castellon was hurt in an industrial accident Nov. 21, at 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron in North Saanich.

He was rushed to hospital, where he remained until he succumbed to his injuries.

The commander of Maritime Forces Pacific issued a statement on his passing Monday.

“My condolences go out to the family and friends of MS Morales Castellon, whose spouse was at his side when he passed,” said Rear-Admiral Art McDonald. “As can be appreciated, the men and women of Maritime Forces Pacific, CFB Esquimalt and 443 Squadron are extremely saddened by his passing. It is never easy to accept the sudden loss of a shipmate and friend.”

McDonald said Castellon immigrated to Canada from Honduras and has served in the Canadian army and navy for the last 22 years.

“To his friends and colleagues he was Will, a guy who loved to chat, was extremely likable and who took time to truly connect with people,” he said. “On behalf of the Navy family, I extend my deepest sympathy to his family, his friends and colleagues. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this difficult time.”

Details surrounding the accident are unclear, but there were no other personnel involved.

An investigation is underway.
