Police chase leaves debris and destruction One person is in custody after a man driving a stolen truck led police on a chase in Edmonton on Sunday. Joe Scarpelli has the details.

A driver is in custody following a police chase and a destructive rampage in Edmonton in which five people, including two police officers, were taken to hospital.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. Sunday, police received reports of a suspicious vehicle at a local trailer park.

According to the Edmonton Police Service, when officers arrived, a 32-year-old male driver they were trying to speak with rammed a police vehicle, then drove off.

Several police units chased the vehicle – a pickup truck towing a flatbed trailer – across 11 kilometres. Video from surveillance systems shows at least two instances of the suspect vehicle driving over property, hitting other vehicles, including a police cruiser, and narrowly missing people.

One of the videos provided to CTV News shows two residents who tried to block the suspect’s vehicle by parking a Dodge Ram 3500 across a residential roadway. The footage shows the suspect driver circling around the parked vehicle, hitting it with his truck and the flatbed trailer.

The police chase ended near 118 Ave. NW and 66 St. NW, after the truck crashed into a car. The driver attempted to steal another vehicle at the intersection before being taken into custody, police say.

Katy MacKay, a driver at the intersection when police arrested the man, was on her way to pick up a cake when she says the man tried to get into her vehicle.

"He was moving with clear intent toward my car," MacKay told reporters. "And when he couldn't get in, he took his fist and struck my window, but it didn't break, so I was happy about that.

"That was wild."

The suspect and two other people were treated and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. Two officers also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and have been released from hospital.

Detectives continue to investigate and have determined the truck was reported stolen.

The unnamed suspect is facing several charges, including flight from peace officer, assault on a police officer with a weapon, failing to stop after an accident, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, theft of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property over $5,000.
