Smash and grab: Video shows theft of ATM using backhoe

Track hoe used to steal ATM Police are asking for help from the public as they investigate the theft of an ATM, using a track hoe.

Police have released video of a daring cash machine robbery at a grocery store in Edmonton, involving a backhoe smashing through a wall.

Store owner Mi Jung Suh says she had to check the security tape twice before she noticed the high-precision robbery, which occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The video shows an excavator arm punching through the wall of the store and scooping out debris, including an ATM, all in one motion.

"The first time, I thought just somebody damaged my store," Mi Jung Suh told CTV Edmonton, adding that she realized it was a robbery after watching the video again. "It's unbelievable," she said.

The thieves and the stolen ATM have yet to be located, but police had no trouble finding the backhoe. It appears to have been commandeered from a construction site nearby, and was left in an alley outside the store.

Construction workers at the site say someone must have taken the backhoe overnight for use in the robbery. One worker observed that the theft must have required knowledge of the store's layout, as the backhoe managed to grab the ATM in one movement.

Police say the suspect or suspects fled the scene in an unidentified vehicle. They are now asking for anyone with information on the incident to contact them for the investigation.
