Moncton, N.B. unveiled a new memorial on Sunday honouring the “dedication and courage” of three Mounties who were killed in the city a year ago.
“This is truly a tremendous way to show our appreciation and to remember those who have given their lives for us,” Moncton Mayor George Leblanc said to a crowd gathered at the unveiling.
The statue, crafted by a local father and son blacksmithing team, is the centrepiece of newly-named Honour Park in north end of the city.
The monument reaches upward and out and features three round, inverted spaces, each representing the lives of the fallen Mounties.
June 4 marked the one-year anniversary of the Moncton shootings when gunman Justin Bourque went on what New Brunswick judge David Smith described as “one of the most horrific crime sprees to happen in Canada,” killing RCMP constables Dave Ross, Fabrice Gevaudan, and Douglas Larche and injuring two others.
The 24-year-old was captured by police after a tense 28-hour manhunt.
In October, Bourque was sentenced to a precedent-setting life in prison with 75 years before being eligible for parole.
