Charlottetown families shake off wintry stretch with free outdoor activities

After a winter storm brought snow and gusty winds to parts of Prince Edward Island this week, families are bundled up and back outside, making the most of Charlottetown’s outdoor rinks and milder weather.

Brad Deighan and his 10-year-old son, Luka Rutledge-Deighan, were at Mulberry Park Multi-Sport Facility on Saturday, enjoying the sun and playing hockey. It is one of six outdoor rinks the city maintains, all free for Islanders to use.

“The ice is really nice,” Rutledge-Deighan said. “I like it because I can play hockey whenever I want.”

“It lets people get outside in the winter and have some fun,” Deighan said, speaking to why the affordability matters.

It’s not the only no-cost option the city supports. Islanders can also borrow snowshoes through the City of Charlottetown’s Parks and Recreation office on a first-come, first-served basis to use on maintained trails. They can also be used for winter walking and, on some routes, biking.

Parks and recreation manager Frank Quinn said conditions can change quickly, and people can stay updated by checking the city’s website. Trails are cleared, sanded and salted after storms.

“I’m actually quite impressed at all activities we are able to do for a smaller city,” Quinn said.

Charlottetown Coun. Kevin Ramsay, chair of the city’s parks, recreation and leisure activities committee, said the more activities the city can offer at a free or low cost, the better. His own family takes advantage of what’s available, with his three children playing hockey and figure skating, and his grandchildren involved in sports as well.

“It’s exercise and it’s fantastic for your mental health too,” Ramsay said. “It’s so easy to just sit at home on your couch and watch TV or on your phone or computer.”

He added the city tries to plan activities through all four seasons.

“A lot of people think that we’re only a summer place to come visit, but we’re here all winter long,” he said.

The city also lists other outdoor options, including cross-country skiing at Victoria Park and Belvedere Golf Course.

When the weather does not cooperate, there are free or low-cost indoor options too, including public skating at four arenas and a walking track at the Simmons Sports Centre.
