Warm and windy Thursday before a wet Friday

As expected, persistent precipitation fell over portions of Alberta and British Columbia overnight Wednesday and early Thursday due to several low-pressure systems situated mostly in the north.

By Thursday morning, Environment and Climate Change Canada had issued freezing rain warnings east and west of Edmonton along the Yellowhead Highway, coinciding with where temperatures were straddling the freezing mark.

Those warnings were lifted by 9 a.m. Thursday.

Snow is expected to continue to fall along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border north of the Yellowhead throughout much of the day Thursday before another low moves in that will track in a more southerly direction overnight.

Before that happens, southern Alberta will enjoy daytime highs in the double-digits with strong westerly winds.

In Calgary, the temperature reached 10 C before 9 a.m. Thursday and, by the afternoon, wind gusts are expected to sit around 40 km/h.

This incoming low will also contain a good amount of moisture and as the temperature falls overnight, rain will transition to snow and portions of central and southern Alberta will experience a similar challenge to that of the capital region. Timing, elevation, and local temperatures will make it difficult to pinpoint the type of precipitation that falls.

Calgary could be just on the outside of this precipitation, but the city might also see heavy, wet snow or some freezing rain by Friday morning.

Daytime highs will drop down to 6 C in Calgary by Friday before another weather pattern shift places the west under a ridge of high pressure.

By the end of the weekend Calgary will see highs that are back into double-digits with the Remembrance Day forecast calling for 11 C with a mix of sun and cloud.

The normal range this time of year is 5 C and -7 C in Calgary.
