Warm and windy start to the week with thunderstorms possible Tuesday

Alberta’s weather over the weekend stayed true to the forecast, with strong wind late Saturday night preceding a rapid, but brief period of instability across Alberta.

In Calgary, Sunday’s daily high of nearly 13 C occurred just after midnight with temperatures falling to 2 C by 10 a.m., accompanied by strong north winds, and mixed precipitation which lasted until the early evening.

Monday’s weather will be similar to Saturday’s in terms of sunshine and wind, but the temperature will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday’s high of 20 C.

This warmth will undergo a temporary disruption Tuesday when a system currently situated along B.C.’s coastline moves into Alberta.

Rain is possible along the foothills and in central Alberta by the early Tuesday afternoon with an enhanced risk of convective activity – or thunderstorms – especially in the more southern communities.

More widespread precipitation will fall over the province – including in Calgary – with only a few isolated pockets of more intense rain.

Behind that low is a dominant ridge of high pressure that will become anchored over Alberta and B.C., elevating both the daily highs and lows until the middle of the weekend.
