Warm and dry start to the weekend – chance of frost outside of Calgary

Return to some seasonal temperatures next week. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

As expected, stronger north winds and scattered rain swept through portions of central and southern Alberta late Thursday.

That rain was an unusual element for this September which has proven to be atypical in terms of precipitation.

From Sept. 1 to 24, 2025 only 0.2 millimetres has been recorded at the official Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) weather station at YYC International, and that amount is well below average.

According to the ECCC 30-year normals data from 1991–2020, September is usually the fifth-wettest month in Calgary with 37.1 millimetres of precipitation or 8.3 per cent of the annual total.

Temperatures are forecast to sit between 16 C and 24 C for the end of the month, which means September 2025 will only record one day with a daytime high below seasonal (it was 18 C on Sept. 4).

Overnight lows in Calgary will range from 5 C to 11 C for the next 10-nights, which is warmer than the average of 2 C.

Under mostly clear skies overnight Friday there is a slight chance of frost in some low-lying areas unless west winds persist closer to the surface.

Even in an absence of wind in Calgary, frost is unlikely in the city due to the urban heat island effect.

There will be more cloud cover after Friday with a chance of rain north of the city Saturday night.

The tail end of that low could track as far south as Calgary and bring some light and scattered rain, however accumulations would be minimal.

The next significant chance of rain is Tuesday as the region experiences some moderation and a return to seasonal highs.
