Tornado possible for a time near Claresholm and Stavely as storms moved into Calgary: ECCC

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) for Calgary Thursday evening that included the possibility of a tornado forming south of the city.

“Thunderstorms have developed over the foothills,“ ECCC posted on its website at 6:15 p.m.

“A few of these thunderstorms may become severe this evening producing large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall.

“There is also the risk of a tornado south of Calgary,” it said.

The area under tornado warning included the M.D. of Willow Creek near Claresholm and Stavely, according to the province.

“Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible,” ECCC said.

“Be prepared for severe weather.”

By 8:30 p.m., ECCC had lifted the watch, including the note regarding a potential tornado.
