‘This industry is foundational’: Construction leaders seek more attention

Stock and oil prices have taken a tumble with President Donald Trump's latest move to impose tariffs on every country in the world.

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) has launched its new federal election campaign focused on securing the future of Calgary’s construction industry.

“Building a Strong Calgary in a Strong Canada,” focuses on four key areas including:

• Expansion of the workforce through targeted immigration;
• Enhancing the workforce by reinstating essential training programs;
• Investing in major infrastructure projects, such as the Green Line LRT; and
• Strengthening the energy sector via development and modernizing current infrastructure.

“With more than 100,000 Calgarians working in construction and over $27 billion contributed to Alberta’s economy last year, this industry is foundational to Calgary’s prosperity,” said Bill Black, president and CEO of the Calgary Contruction Association, which is one of the members of the CCA.

“Our campaign lays out practical, locally driven solutions that federal leaders must act on if they want to support economic growth, housing, and infrastructure in our city.”

As the federal election approaches, the CCA plans to speak with policymakers, candidates and the public to ensure construction opportunities are top of mind.

“To build the Canada we need—one that allows Canadians to live and thrive in their communities, compete globally, and stand up to emerging political threats—the next federal government must take decisive action to support Canada’s construction industry,” said Louis-Philippe Champagne, the CCA’s associate vice-president of public affairs and industry practices.

The platform will be launched between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. Friday.
