Temperatures to sit up to 20 degrees above average on Wednesday

Not much snow left on the ground in Calgary. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

More unusually warm weather is expected across southern Alberta this week as a ridge of high pressure remains anchored over the west.

Both the daytime highs and daily lows will (mostly) remain above freezing until early next week.

On Monday, the high in Calgary is expected to reach 9 C, compared to the normal high of -2 C, and that will be one of the coolest maximum temperatures over the next seven days.

By Wednesday, the daytime high in Calgary is forecast to reach 17 C with a low of 6 C, which is 20 degrees warmer than the average low of -14 C.

Westerly winds will flow across the southern portion of the province – with stronger gradients in the southwest.

In Calgary, the sustained winds on Monday will be around 20 km/h with gusts up to 40 km/h.

This warm start to February is coming off a warmer than average January.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, January 2025 finished with an average temperature of -3.4 C which make this the 17^th warmest January on record.

The warmest January in Calgary occurred in 1919 with an average temperature of -0.6 C.

A sinking polar vortex over east-central Canada and the United States will help to anchor that ridge in the west, and as the week progresses temperatures will continue to rise across most of Western Canada at the same time they drop for locations inside of that trough.

As of Monday morning, there is little-to-no measurable snow remaining on the ground across central and southern Alberta, but rapid melting will continue in areas where there is still some snow and ice.

A moderating pattern is expected by the middle of next week, and temperatures will start to drop, however at this point they will likely still remain above average.
