Sunny and warm last day of winter for Calgary

Warm weather for the first day of spring. Gina Martin has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

After a stretch of cooler temperatures and cloudy conditions, the sun makes its triumphant return today to say “farewell” to winter.

While northerly winds made the morning a bit chilly, those winds will transition to blow out of the south in the early afternoon.

The combo of clear conditions and warm winds will get Calgary up to a high of 8 C today.

We will hold on to above seasonal temperatures for the first day of spring with a high of 9 C, but an atmospheric river (AR) hitting the west coast will cause clouds to move in over southern Alberta on Thursday.

While the sky will clear up on Friday with a lovely high of 10 C in store, that AR won’t be finished with us.

Come early Friday evening, a second band of precipitation looks to be making its way over the Rocky Mountain Range, so light showers could be possible.

It’s on Saturday, though, where we could see more of the precipitation fall in the form of rain, snow, or a mix of both.

That’s still several days away and not all weather models are in agreement about what could be coming our way and when, so it’s still a bit of a wait-and-see situation at the moment.

It will be wise to have the rain jacket and the sunglasses handy for the first weekend of spring.
