Snowfall warnings issued for southern Alberta with another 15 to 20 cm on the way

A number of yellow-level warnings were issued Thursday, Nov. 27, 2025, including snowfall (white), fog (light grey), and air quality (dark grey).

Persistent snow is expected to fall over southern Alberta over the next 24 hours, prompting a “yellow warning” for snowfall.

A new colour-coded weather alert system has been implemented by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

It focuses on the potential impacts of various weather events, as well as forecaster confidence in said event occurring.

A yellow warning is the most common – and will be issued in cases of hazardous weather that is expected to produce “moderate, localized and/or short-term” impacts.

For Thursday’s yellow-level snowfall warning, ECCC says snowfall with total amounts of 15 to 20 cm is expected.

“Snowfall will begin this afternoon in southern Alberta. Snow will intensify in the evening and continue through Friday.”

That snow is expected to create issues on surfaces like roads and walkways as it accumulates, and may impact visibility.

The highest accumulations from this event are expected along the southern border of Alberta – especially along the foothills – however, snow is likely as far north as Calgary.

Between one to three centimetres is likely to fall in Calgary, but if that system tracks a little further to the north, Calgary could see as much as five cm.

Temperatures will be slightly below seasonal on Thursday and continue to fall over the coming days.

By the weekend, overnight lows in Calgary are likely to sit closer to -20 C and feel colder than that with the wind chill.

There will be a gradual improvement in temperatures starting Sunday, and by next week, most days will see highs slightly warmer than average.
