RSV vaccinations now free for Albertans 70 years and older

Published:

Albertans 70 years and older, and First Nations, Metis and Inuit residents who are 60 years and older, are now eligible to receive the RSV vaccine for free.

Alberta Health has lowered the age eligibility for seniors who can receive free RSV vaccines.

As of March 10, the province says Albertans 70 years and older, and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit residents 60 years and older, are eligible to receive the RSV vaccine free of charge.

The previous age requirement for the provincially funded RSV vaccine was 75.

Eligible Albertans can get vaccinated at participating community pharmacies, approximately 20 medical clinics and 170 AHS public health centres and First Nations community health centres.

The province said the expanded eligibility will help more people who are at a higher risk of RSV complications get the vaccine for free.

Those who are not eligible under the province’s program can purchase the vaccine from a pharmacist for $300.

RSV is an infection that affects the airways and lungs. While normally mild, it can affect young children, older adults and people with certain health problems more seriously.

Alberta Health says RSV can make people over the age of 70 very sick, especially if they have heart, lung, kidney or liver problems; diabetes, a weak immune system, a condition that affects the nervous system or a lot of extra weight.

To book a vaccination, visit the Alberta Vaccine Booking System online, call your local pharmacy or call Health Link at 811. Many pharmacies also offer walk-in RSV vaccinations.
