Rain, snow, graupel and lightning all possible Friday

Cool and wet on Friday in Calgary. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

A fast-moving low-pressure system cutting through Alberta brought cooler air, intense northwest winds and precipitation into the province overnight and early Friday.

A stronger westerly flow along the southern border will meet up with that cooler air mass later in the day and enhance local instability.

Rain, snow, graupel and lightning are all possible across central and southern Alberta on Friday along with northwest winds of 20-40 km/h in Calgary and 50-70 km/h in other areas.

There will be a brief warmup on Saturday and Sunday although daytime highs will remain slightly below the seasonal average of 12 C in Calgary.

A low-riding jet stream will be a part of the weather story for much of the next week allowing for cooler air to limit temperatures for daily highs with lows that are slightly above the seasonal average of -1 C.

More precipitation is expected for the B.C. interior on Saturday with the heaviest accumulations likely to stick to the B.C. side of the Rockies as well as areas west of Calgary and around the capital region.

The rest of the next week will include a mix of sun and cloud with daytime highs fluctuating between 9 C and 13 C.
