Rain, freezing rain, snow and mixed precipitation all possible this week

The western Prairies will be the initial meeting ground for a couple of low-pressure systems over the next few days.

Colder air from the northern low will interact with moisture embedded in the Pacific low, producing all forms of precipitation depending on local temperatures and elevations.

As of Wednesday morning, rain was already funnelling into the southern B.C. coastline as this fast-moving system tracked north and east across the B.C. interior where it started to transition into snow in higher elevations.

Mixed precipitation was evident on radar along the southern border of Alberta by the Wednesday morning commute.

Rain is likely around Calgary by the late morning/early afternoon Wednesday and will be more persistent in central Alberta by the late afternoon.

Heavy wet snow is expected on both sides of the Rockies on Wednesday and early Thursday as well as along the foothills and near the Yellowhead Highway in Alberta.

This could be the first accumulating snowfall of the season for the city of Edmonton and surrounding communities, with between five to 10 centimetres possible over the next couple of days.

Freezing rain may become an issue in central Alberta and southern Alberta overnight Wednesday and early Thursday as temperatures are forecast to sit around the freezing mark in those areas at this time.

Strong sustained wind with more intense gusts will flow by Wednesday afternoon closer to the foothills and as far east as the Edmonton to Lethbridge corridor.

Thursday will bring a brief warmup with daytime highs in Calgary forecast to reach 12 C.

But then, on Friday, another wave of unsettled weather will race through Alberta bringing more heavy, wet snow to the eastern side of central and southern Alberta.
