New measles cases discovered in Alberta’s south health zone

Alberta Health says four new measles cases have been detected in the south health zone as the Alberta Medical Association pushes vaccination.

Four new measles cases have been reported in the South Health Zone, Alberta Health reported Wednesday.

The data comes from the latest online update on the government’s website.

There is no information about where the cases were confirmed or if they were connected to previous outbreaks.

The new cases come as the Alberta Medical Association calls for the province to launch a robust awareness campaign to inform residents about the importance of vaccines.

If that doesn’t happen, the group warns the virus will spread out of control.

According to Alberta Health, there have been 122 measles cases in the province this year, 14 of which are considered active – or infectious – at this time.

Of this year’s cases, the greatest number were detected in youth five to 17 years old (75) and children less than five years old (30).

Measles vaccinations are provided free of charge as part of the routine schedule for every child born in Alberta.
