The Mount Royal University Cougars’ men’s hockey season ended in heartbreaking fashion Thursday.

The men’s Cougars took a 3-1 lead in the second period when Spencer Moe scored to put the team on the precipice of advancing to the University Cup final.

However, Toronto’s Kevin Gursoy scored late in the period to make it 3-2 after two periods.

Early in the final frame, Teague Patton took a pass from Connor Bouchard and scored to restore the two-goal cushion at 4-2.

However, Ian Martin scored to cut it to 4-3, and then Daniil Grigorev scored to tie it up, sending the game into overtime.

Flash forward to the fifth overtime, when Toronto Metropolitan finally pulled it out on a goalmouth scramble where Spencer Shugrue poked it into the net, beyond the reach of Cougar goaltender Shane Farkas to give Toronto a 5-4 win in the longest game in University Cup history.

The Cougars’ season is over after a fantastic season.
