More snow Thursday with greatest accumulations forecast for southern Alberta

More snowfall expected later this week. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

Visibility was limited across a good portion of eastern Alberta and areas north of the Edmonton region early Wednesday and into the morning commute.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued fog advisories that covered both sides of the Alberta-Saskatchewan border and extended into northern Alberta.

The national weather agency explained, “Near zero visibility in fog is forecast to continue this morning,” with conditions expected to improve throughout the morning.

By 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, ECCC dropped the advisories for the southern-most regions of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Daytime highs across most of the country will be cooler Wednesday due to a low-riding jet stream that has allowed arctic air to funnel toward the southern borders.

Temperatures are expected to continue to drop over the next few days, as this pattern digs in and the polar vortex edges into Hudson Bay.

More snow is expected for southern Alberta and B.C. by the end of the week as that colder air mass meets up with a moisture-laden system from the Pacific Northwest.

The highest accumulations are forecast for the southern border of Alberta, but this system will impact communities in central Alberta as well.

Calgary is expecting between three to five centimetres of snow, with most of that precipitation coming in later Thursday.

Daytime highs will sit around -3 C in Calgary on Wednesday, and -11 C by Saturday – which is equal to the average low this time of year.
