The Western Canadian Baseball League is returning to its roots this summer, and featuring our very own Lethbridge Bulls in doing so.

The league is announcing an inaugural Rural Roots Baseball Classic game this season to pay homage to its history and championship spirit.

It’s being hosted on June 8 at Doug Lehman Field in Oyen, Alta., between the Bulls and the newest expansion team, the Sylvan Lake Gulls.

It’s an event committed to shining a light on the league’s enduring connection to small-town fans and families, highlighting why the rural legacy of community is so important to the game.

“You go back to the communities in Saskatchewan and throughout Alberta as well … without these communities and days gone by, I don’t think we’d be at where we’re at with the Western Canadian Baseball League right now,” said Kevin Kvame, Lethbridge Bulls president.

“We have lots of fans here from back in the day as well as families and all those types of people, and those people are excited about being able to come and see some of their former players back, and we’re excited to have them, and we’re excited to be able to host this first game,” said Doug Jones, Oyen mayor and former Oyen Pronghorns player.

The Western Canadian Baseball League opens the 2025 season on May 28.

The Lethbridge Bulls start their season off with a five-game road trip before hosting Edmonton for their home opener at Spitz Stadium on June 5.
