Few superstars loom as large over one city as LeBron James did over Cleveland.
King James at Alberta Theatre Projects explores the NBA star’s legendary status and its impact on ordinary people in King James.
Actor Devin MacKinnon—one of only two performers in the play—says it has a smaller but more universal theme: friendship.
“It really highlights the growth in people, I think, and it highlights the growth in friendships and how friendships are, kind of, living, ever-changing things,” MacKinnon told CTV News.

King James is a co-production with Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton, where MacKinnon and Michael Blake presented it last fall.
“Once the train leaves the station, that’s it. We don’t really get a break until intermission,” Blake said.
“It allows us the opportunity to really lock into each other. We have each other’s back.”
King James is on stage at the Martha Cohen Theatre until March 16.
