Inconsistent week ahead with mixed precipitation moving in overnight

Some precipitation is in the forecast this week. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

The only consistent component in weather this week will be inconsistency.

Both temperatures and conditions will be changing quickly, starting on Tuesday with a daytime high of 18 C and some sunshine before mixed precipitation overnight and a high of 6 C on Wednesday.

A low pressure system will track south and east throughout Alberta on Tuesday and Wednesday, introducing instability and potentially leading to some brief thunderstorm activity in central Alberta Tuesday afternoon.

Rain, mixed precipitation and snow will move through the province over the next 36 hours, but due to the nature of the system and the proximity to the mountains, both the type of precipitation and the amounts are difficult to forecast.

The counter-clockwise rotation around the low will likely lead to some upsloping, where the western edge of the low pushes up against the Rockies.

In higher elevations heavy, wet snow is likely, especially in the southwest corner of Alberta and along the southern border.

In Calgary, rain is expected to transition to a rain/snow mix, before turning into wet snow by Wednesday morning.

Once again this cold spell will be short-lived, with a jump in daytime highs for the end of the week bringing values back into the mid-teens by Friday.

The end of the long weekend is looking to be similar to how last weekend was, a warm start to Saturday ahead of another drop in temperatures and rapidly deteriorating conditions by the end of the day.

Easter Sunday and Monday will both include temperatures that are well-below seasonal with a good chance of mixed precipitation or snow.
