Inclusion Lethbridge to honour Nicholas Sheran Elementary School with award

Nicholas Sheran Elementary School will be given the Betty Grigg Inclusive Education Award by Inclusion Lethbridge for its promotion of inclusion.

An elementary school in Lethbridge will be awarded for its promotion of inclusion.

Nicholas Sheran Elementary School will be given the Betty Grigg Inclusive Education Award by Inclusion Lethbridge for its efforts to display outstanding inclusive practices in dealing with staff, students, families and the community.

“(The award) honours schools that find ways to make sure all students have the support and opportunity to achieve their academic potential, all while enjoying full participation in all school activities with friends and classmates,” the Lethbridge School Division said in a release.

The award is named after one of the parents who led a movement to ensure all people are welcomed and included.

“More than 65 years ago, families of children with a developmental disability had a vision of a community that welcomed and included all people,” the school division said.

“Today, that vision lives at the heart of Inclusion Lethbridge.

“Betty Grigg was one of the pioneering parents that led the change in our communities and province. She was well-known and respected for building awareness and networks within the community.”

The school will be presented the award this coming weekend at Inclusion Lethbridge’s spring gala, held at the German Canadian Club.

Several other division schools have received the award in the past, including General Stewart Elementary School, Dr. Gerald B. Probe Elementary School, Galbraith Elementary School and G.S. Lakie Middle School.
