Funnel clouds, frost and fog all possible over the next 24 hours

More rain expected for Calgary. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

A dominant surface low pressure system is helping to cap the temperature for most of Alberta while also producing light and persistent rain in central and southern Alberta.

On Wednesday, the heaviest accumulations will fall around the capital region and south through the QEII corridor, especially around Red Deer.

Thunderstorms are possible across much of the eastern half of the province later in the day but, similar to Tuesday, it is unlikely any potential storms will become severe in nature.

North winds are expected to intensify throughout the day in communities south of Red Deer with Calgary likely to see sustained winds of 20 km/h and gusts up to 40 km/h.

The combination of weak instability and stronger wind shear could lead to funnel cloud development in east central Alberta by the afternoon.

Frost is possible along the foothills overnight as temperatures are expected to drop close to the freezing mark in some communities, which would prompt frost advisories from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

In Calgary, the overnight low is forecast to sit just above freezing in part due to the “urban heat island effect” a phenomenon that occurs when either industrial and/or larger centres (which contain predominantly non-vegetative surfaces) release heat accumulated throughout the day.

Widespread fog is likely across central and southern Alberta by the morning – including Calgary – due to the combination of moisture-rich surfaces and cooler overnight temperatures.

A gradual return to seasonal temperatures will occur for the end of the week, and by early next week the daytime highs in Calgary will sit in the mid 20s.
