Flag raising outside city hall signals start of Veterans’ Week in Lethbridge

The start of Veterans’ Week in Lethbridge was marked on Tuesday with a flag raising outside city hall.

Veterans’ Week is to honour those in the community who served leading up to Remembrance Day.

A number of events will take place throughout the week, including Military Appreciation Night at the Lethbridge Hurricanes game on Friday.

Following the flag raising, the Lethbridge Legion officially opened the new memorial crosswalk on Fourth Avenue South near the cenotaph.

The crosswalk features the phrase “Lest we forget” in English, French and Blackfoot.

“It’s kind of nice that it’s in this area with the backdrop of the cenotaph in our community and there might be talk of possibly changing the name of this road to Veterans Avenue permanently, on a year-round basis,” said Ryan Parker, Lethbridge city councillor.

“That’s something council will have to decide on, but I think it puts a nice bookmark to a wonderful project in a wonderful area.”

To mark Remembrance Day, there will be two ceremonies next Tuesday—one at the Lethbridge Trade and Convention Centre and another outside at the cenotaph.
